Our 2007 Event Schedule

Here's the exciting schedule of events for this year's Scene of the Crime Festival, August 11, 2007. All events are within easy walking distance of the free Wolfe Island ferry - and so is our onsite bookseller, As The Plot Thickens will have copies of all our guests' work available at the United Church until 2:00 pm. After that, he'll be set up at the Anglican Church, where we have our afternoon program. Don't miss your chance to get your books autographed by your favourite Canadian crime writers.

FOR NEW WRITERS

9-11 a.m.

Writing Workshop

We've been offering a Writing Workshop at Scene of the Crime since our second year. Our workshop instructor, Board-member Violette Malan, has always had a full class of those eager to commit murder and mayhem on the written page — so don't wait until the last minute to sign up. This year's all-new workshop will address the topic of Revising and Editing. As Violette says, "the difference between a professional writer and an amateur is that the pros know how to revise." Come and find out how.

FOR MYSTERY READERS

10 a.m.

Coffee with the Authors

This won't be your only chance to rub elbows with our invited guests, Giles Blunt, Peter Clement, Lyn Hamilton, Edward D. Hoch, Maureen Jennings, and Grant Allen recipient Eric Wright, but it will be your first chance! Board members will welcome those participants who aren't at the Writing Workshop to the Island Grill, where there'll be coffee and baked goods available to get the day started.

11 a.m.

Author Readings

Our invited guests will get to work right away at the Wolfe Island United Church, where they'll be reading from their published mysteries.

12:30 p.m.

Lunch at the United Church

In addition to the usual fabulous lunch, we're getting a special treat this year from Sue Pike (SOTC Board) and Vicki Cameron of The Ladies Killing Circle. A couple of years ago Sue noticed how many writers we have living on and along the Rideau Canal, and came up with the idea of an anthology using the Rideau Canal as ... you guessed it ... the scene of the crime. The result? Locked Up: Tales of Mystery and Mischance along the Rideau Canal Waterway, edited by Sue herself. Vicki is right in step with Shillings, a history mystery for middle graders featuring Colonel By's children. Local writers telling fictional tales about places near you? Come and hear about it.

After lunch we'll shift the scene, just down the road to the Trinity Anglican Church, where Grant Allen's father was the minister.

2 p.m.

Presentation of the Grant Allen Collection

Through a generous donation from our esteemed literary historian, David Skene-Melvin, a beautiful cabinet has been built to feature and display selected works from the Grant Allen collection, including a first edition of one of Allen's many works. The cabinet can be seen at the Wolfe Island branch of the Public Library, and we'll be presenting a selection of the works of this year's guest authors to the library.

2:15 p.m.

The Grant Allen Award

The Reverend Chris Carr will welcome and introduce the man of the hour, our Grant Allen recipient for 2007, Eric Wright. After the award presentation former Scene of the Crime Board President and Festival founder Therese Greenwood will "grill" the suspect. Let's see how Eric holds up under questioning!

3:30 p.m.

Location, Location, Location; Panel Discussion:

Just how do authors go about choosing, the scene of the crime?
The fictional city of Algonquin Bay, Morocco, historical Toronto, Wales, a Buffalo hospital, Scotland ... These are just a few of the locations to be found in the books of Giles Blunt, Lyn Hamilton, Maureen Jennings, and Peter Clement. How did they decide where to set their books? What would they change if they had it to do over again?

4:30 p.m.

Grill the Authors

Join us at the Island Grill for an informal Q&A session, featuring Ed Hoch. ATTENTION you short story writers: Ed's had a story in every Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine for the last 34 years. This is your chance to learn about short story writing from a Grand Master.

And don't think our other authors just get to sit around having a beer! No, no. They'll each be at their own table, where you can grab your chance to give them a good grilling as well.

6 p.m.

The Ever-Popular Church Supper

Short Story winners! Door prizes! Homemade pies! And we promise you won't miss the ferry!
