2005 Scene of the Crime
short story contest rules

The Scene Of The Crime Festival's
Wolfe Island Prize
for first Canadian short crime fiction

First Prize: $50.00 and publication in Kingston Life Magazine.

Second and Third Prizes: $25.00 Gift Certificates from Novel Idea Bookstore

Contest Guidelines

  • Stories must be written by either Canadian citizens or those resident in Canada who are previously unpublished in mystery or crime fiction
  • Previous winners are ineligible
  • Submit 3 copies of your entry, postmarked or hand delivered by May 15, 2005.
  • The story must be fiction, and a mystery (crime, suspense, private eye, etc.)
  • The author's name, address, phone number and email address must be included on a separate sheet of paper. The name of the author should not appear on the story itself. Entries not complying with this rule will be disqualified.
  • Include the story's title and page number in the top right hand corner of each page
  • Manuscripts must be typed, double-spaced, on regular white bond paper (use one side only), in flush left mode
  • Story must not exceed 3500 words
  • Stories must be original and unpublished up to the time the winners are declared June 30, 2005. Winners will be notified by telephone or email.
  • Entries are limited to one per person and must be mailed. Stories submitted by fax or email will not be accepted
  • No changes will be allowed to a story once it has been received. Manuscripts will not be returned. To ensure that stories have reached the judges, participants may include a stamped, self-addressed postcard with their entries.
  • Entry must be accompanied by a $5.00 entry fee. Make cheques payable to Scene of the Crime.
  • Keep a copy of your final manuscript. No copies will be returned.
  • Results will be posted on the Scene of the Crime Web site. If you wish to be notified of the results if you do not win, include a stamped, self-addressed envelope with your entry or include your email address.
